Germany’s Greens party have soared in popularity in the last year to levels around 20 percent — double the amount they got in the last federal election. Greens co-chairman Cem Oezdemir explains why the party that pushes renewable energy and eschews nuclear power is doing so well in one of the world’s leading industrial nations.

In Germany, where many consider their cars sacred and most politicians on both the left and right refuse to consider tampering with the unlimited speed on the Autobahn for fear of hurting the car industry, the leader of the Greens party said it is high time for the country to join the rest of the civilised world and put an upper limit on Autobahn speeds — to cut greenhouse gas emissions.
