Skip the cab and hoof it!

It might not be a sin to be zealous. But I have to admit I have a sometimes-unfortunate habit of over-doing things. I offer this as a health warning to anyone planning to read beyond this point.
Perhaps it’s nothing to be proud of and fear not: I am not on any kind of a crusade [...]

How much electricity do you use in a year?

Posted by Erik Kirschbaum in Friday, January 16th 2009
Topics: Gas Mileage Improvement devices, Gas Prices News

It was a disarmingly simple question but, embarrassingly, I didn’t have a clue when first asked that 18 months ago. Even though I’d have to describe myself as a genuine tightwad when it comes to expenditures, I simply had no idea, strangely enough, about how much money my four-person household was spending on electricity — [...]

Germany’s ‘Sun King’ Asbeck explains solar power for Vatican

Posted by Erik Kirschbaum in Thursday, December 11th 2008
Topics: Gas Mileage Improvement devices, Gas Prices News

Every once in a while you run into someone with so much energy that you find yourself wishing you could plug something into them to tap a bit of that excess power. On a dark, cloudy December afternoon, I spoke to Frank Asbeck, the chairman of SolarWorld and dubbed the “Sonnenkoenig” (Sun King) by a [...]

Solar power magnate’s bold bid for ailing carmaker

Posted by Erik Kirschbaum in Wednesday, November 19th 2008
Topics: Gas Mileage Improvement devices, Gas Prices News

SolarWorld chief executive Frank Asbeck raised eyebrows by announcing plans to bid for the German plants of General Motors’ Opel unit.
Here was a small 10-year-old company specialising in producing photovoltaic systems with 2,000 employees and annual sales of 700 million euros preparing the stage for a seemingly audacious takeover of a legendary 146-year-old German company [...]

Save money, cut CO2 and lose weight cycling to work

Posted by Erik Kirschbaum in Wednesday, October 1st 2008
Topics: Gas Mileage Improvement devices, Gas Prices News

By Peter Jebautzke
Getting caught speeding changed my life — for the better.
It inadvertently turned me into a devoted bike commuter, has saved me lots of money, aggravation — and even saved the world a little bit of carbon dioxide to boot. Since giving up the car for my daily commutes by bike to work in [...]

A Silver Bullet or just ‘Greenwash’?

Posted by Erik Kirschbaum in Tuesday, September 9th 2008
Topics: Gas Mileage Improvement devices, Gas Prices News

Can carbon capture and storage (CCS) save the world?
Is this the silver bullet everyone’s been waiting for? Or just pie in the sky? Is capturing and storing carbon dioxide the technology breakthrough to cut greenhouse gas emissions without getting in the way of economic growth and industry’s “addiction” to fossil fuels? Or is it just [...]

Good news for China cars, metro

Posted by Erik Kirschbaum in Thursday, August 14th 2008
Topics: Gas Mileage Improvement devices, Gas Prices News

For anyone with a ‘green heart’ there was plenty of good news on the front page of the China Daily this morning, an English-language newspaper read by a myriad of expatriates and, especially during the Olympics, tens of thousands of journalists from around the world.

“Tax on big cars raised to save fuel,” read the page [...]

‘Green Games’ look more like ‘Grey Games’ so far

Smog may mean that the Beijing Olympics end up as the ‘grey games’ rather than the ‘green games’ the organisers are hoping for.

Hoping for higher energy prices?

Posted by Erik Kirschbaum in Thursday, July 31st 2008
Topics: Gas Mileage Improvement devices, Gas Prices News

Are gasoline and energy prices too high? What’s high enough?
It may be a distinct miniority opinion, but if you were to ask me, I’d say I think they’re not high enough — and I sincerely hope they keep rising. It may be the only way the world wakes up to the perils of climate change [...]

Obama tackling climate change music to Europe’s ears

Posted by Erik Kirschbaum in Thursday, July 24th 2008
Topics: Gas Mileage Improvement devices, Gas Prices News

It took Barack Obama a mere nine minutes into his first speech in Europe to tackle the issue of climate change — and end eight years of frustration about U.S. foot-dragging on global warming by the world’s number one emitter of greenhouse gases.

The U.S. presidential candidate got right to the point in Berlin when he [...]

German power boss goes renewables route…at home too

Posted by Erik Kirschbaum in Friday, July 11th 2008
Topics: Gas Mileage Improvement devices, Gas Prices News

You know the wind is changing for renewables — so to speak — when the head of Europe’s biggest power producer becomes an advocate — and then even decides to reduce his own personal reliance on fossil fuels by powering and heating his new house with photovoltaic and geothermal energies.

Wulf Bernotat, the chief executive of [...]

Merkel wants to cut CO2, but not on German roads

Posted by Erik Kirschbaum in Sunday, October 28th 2007
Topics: Gas Mileage Improvement devices, Gas Prices News

Germany’s conservative chancellor, Angela Merkel, has long been trying to persuade the United States and the rest of the world  to cut their greenhouse gas emissions .
But when it comes to her own “backyard”, she rules out a measure that could instantly cut Germany’s CO2 — a speed limit on the country’s high-speed motorways, which the influential German carmakers have long opposed [...]

Switching off PCs at night and getting grief for it

Posted by Erik Kirschbaum in Saturday, October 27th 2007
Topics: Gas Mileage Improvement devices, Gas Prices News

Switching off idled computers, unused lighting and copy machines at night or on weekends might seem like a fairly small and relatively uncontroversial way to save energy — and reduce CO2.
But I nevertheless get grief at times for switching off idled computers or some of the overhead lights at night, when the office is all but empty. [...]

German politicians’ fight to be greener

Posted by Erik Kirschbaum in Thursday, October 25th 2007
Topics: Gas Mileage Improvement devices, Gas Prices News

There’s a fascinating battle unfolding in Germany for the moral high ground in the fight against climate change, an issue that has electrified German voters over the last year and will likely loom larger ahead of 2009 elections.
Chancellor Angela Merkel fancies herself a leader in the fight against global warming, despite her government letting utilities [...]

Gore warmed up by global warming

Posted by Erik Kirschbaum in Wednesday, October 24th 2007
Topics: Gas Mileage Improvement devices, Gas Prices News

Al Gore used to be known as such a stiff in public when he was Vice President that he even enjoyed retelling self-deprecating jokes – like “Question: How can you tell Al Gore from his Secret Service agents? Answer: Al Gore is the stiff one”.
But something happened along the way to become a Nobel laureate.
Climate [...]

In this video from Romania, a car is driving down a highway with four children riding in the trunk. While the children appear to be having a good enough time, the conditions are obviously anything but safe. In fact, the children are using their arms to apparently hold up the door to the trunk. At […]

A Goodwill Industries outlet in St. Louis received a very generous donation this week: $14,505 in cash. Store manager Tina Wells was sorting through a box of Christmas donations when she discovered the money, which included 266 $50 […]
