Hi: Yes the batteries are expensive.
They are about 5 to 7 thousand dollars depending on the car.
They are however expected to last 8 to 10 years.
I would assume that they would also have some effect on the trade in value of the car.
If you want to trade in your 8 year old car even if the mileage is low, but the battery is almost ready for replacement, i wonder how the trade in value of that car is VS one that has low mileage but a regular gas engine that does not need to be replaced. ( just food for thought)

There are some nickel plants in operation now that pollute. But it's a local problem, not a global one.

And there's nothing that says we can't clean up the plant. Or that hybrids have to use nickel-based batteries. Some are now using lithium-metal hydride instead.

We should focus on the real problems. Clean up the nickel plants for local good. Use hybrids for global good. Develop better batteries for hybrids.

Rejecting hybrids because a few nickel plants pollute is a bad idea.

If, they found Nickle, I assume these are Nickle-Cadmium Batteries. But, I not make a promise.

I looked around some may be "nickel metal hydride".

Here a link about a battery MIT working with;

Motor Trend had an article about Li-ion batteries being the norm as stated in the news but it turned out to be ni-mh batteries in 03. The author went to a car show expecting li-ion batteries and was told no it was ni-mh. So if you have to rely on someone giving you the straight story on which type is best you should maybe try one first. If your care-full then you would get a long life out of a battery as stated here . If it is something to test out the batteries with then a small cheap one would be best. Zap motors has small electric types I noticed from an article in wired.com. - . Not a hybrid but probably good for a short commute.

You really should be using a Diesel specific motor oil, like Shell Rotella or Mobil Delvac. You may have to visit a truck stop to find them. If you're only topping off a quart, any oil will be ok. Don't worry about mixing different oils if it's just a top-up. Next oil change, buy a couple of spare quarts of whatever they are using.

BTW, you can find some excellent info on Diesel maintenance at this site:

If you are in North America, your choices are very limited. There is the 300SD/S350 but those are quite rare or the E300D. The E-Class diesels are a little more common but there are not that many of them around either. The ones that do go on sale on the used car market are usually snapped up very quickly as they are in demand.

Alright so what will that do for the people in winter time? Are families going to carry their kids on their back while they are riding? Even without those issues you're 20 times more likley to die on a motorcycle than? you are in a car which is enough to scare most people out of riding.

Almost none have needed replacing. Prius used as taxis have run several hundred thousand kilometres not needing batteries. The batteries also have very long warranties, far longer than any other parts in the car, so don't worry about it.

And the batteries are also almost 100% recyclable by the way.

Just as a aside, here is a figure that tells you how well made the batteries are, compared to other car parts. Toyota reports it has replaced .003% of the batteries under warranty. That is like 3 for every 100,000 batteries!

Oh and yes, how people pay money for this ugly piece of car instead of buying a modern diesel (which can be superior? to prius in every aspect, especially enviroment friendly), is beyond me. Guess Toyota fools alot of people with their "young couple/family-safety" commercials.
