they don't really help the environment they just do a lot less damage because they use less gas. less gas= less greenhouse gas(carbon dioxide) released into atmosphere. carbon dioxide causes global warming and raise of temperatures kills plants and animals that are not used to it.

I don't know the answer to your question. However, gasoline is also a finite resource which must be extracted from the Earth, and hybrids save on gasoline. Additionally, in a few years hybrids will replace nickel-metal hydride batteries with lithium-ion technology. And finally, hybrid batteries are fully recycleable:

"Toyota has a comprehensive battery recycling program in place and has been recycling nickel-metal hydride batteries since the RAV4 Electric Vehicle was introduced in 1998. Every part of the battery, from the precious metals to the plastic, plates, steel case and the wiring, is recycled. To ensure that batteries come back to Toyota, each battery has a phone number on it to call for recycling information and dealers are paid a $200 "bounty" for each battery."

The Prius and the Camry have the same technology, so the Prius isn't the way to go.
I drive a 2007 Prius and I did not buy it for the acceleration.
You will find the same issue with the Ford Escape Hybrid.

There are a couple of vehicles that are considered 'hybrids', but don't have the same technology as the Camry and Prius.

For example, the Chevy Malibu Hybrid and the Saturn Aura Hybrid are just as quick as the 4-cylinder versions of the vehicles, but they don't switch to battery mode while you are driving. These 'hybrids' only cut the engine when you are sitting at a stop light or stuck in traffic.
Plus, they are about $4,000+ more expensive for only about a 2 mpg increase in mileage per gallon. Not worth it.

In my opinion, if you can't deal with the lack of acceleration, then a hybrid vehicle is not for you right now.
There are some future models that will be better, but Toyota and Ford are way ahead of the curve on the Hybrids right now.

The 2005+ Prius is the way to go. Test drive one. The older ones are a bit underpowered but will still get up and go better than other hybrids of it's day.

If you want an SUV...the Escape is a better hybrid thatn the Prius IMHO but it's a larger vehicle and you mentioned "car".
The Escape Hybrid also has great pickup. The 2009 is better then the 2008 even though they look the same, the motor was changed. Better mileage and power.

I wouldn't waste my money on a partial- or -electric assist hybrid. You will be disappointed and spend alot of $ for nothing. The Civic hybrid is also an underpowered letdown.

You could also buy a Chevy Volt. That will be the fastest.

Overall to get the best gas mileage you should put the pedal to the floor....get up to seppd....let off and back on the gas to maintain speed ( set your cruise too)

This also will lead you to being able to driving faster than everyone else and your engine dosn't have to do a ton of work...your batteries take a huge chunk of the load off the line.

Since driving fast = better gas mileage...I have to say that Hybrids are kinda "faster" than regular cars because you get better mileage when you get up and go off the line and your going....well, FASTER.

It may not feel as fast because of the CVT (you can google about that if you don't know what it is) but it provides better and smoother takeoffs.

I loved my hybrid for 160,000 miles. :)

There are kits that allow you to change engines from gasoline to natural gas. You'd have to check out which ones will fir your specific car. It might be a bit pricey to have it done.
Right now refueling just anywhere is not an option. What do you do if you're on a long trip. There aren't any lists of CNG locations available that I know of.
If you are using the vehicle for trips to work and around town, the home refuel point might not be too bad. But, what happens if yhou are on a lengthly trip and need to refuel in PoDunk, Iowa?
Many construction machines and warehouse machines are using CNG.

The tax break is already gone on the Prius model, it was in effect until the 40,000 was sold.

There are several types of hybrids. some only power the vehicle under idle by battery some charge the batteries while driving with gasoline, some create electricity under breaking. The least expensive full hybrid system take 8 years of gas saving to pay for the inflated original price.

The battery service is so very expensive at this point and the vehicles electrocute unwary mechanics. So no fiddling under the hood!!!

Disposal of the used battery pack will cause more environmental impact than the hydrocarbon emissions would have.

The time is not now and these aren't they hybrids that we will be driving.

Hydrogen cell technology is on the horizon and shows better promise.

One thing you should know about hybrids, the savings in fuel economy is more than offset by the higher price of the hybrid. You would be better off buying a regular fuel efficient car. I think pretty well of the Camry.

My wife and I have a Toyota Prius. It's weird. When you turn on the ignition, nothing happens, but when you put it in drive and step on the gas, it moves. It has big batteries which drive the car until it needs help (often), then the gasoline engine comes on and helps drive the car and charge the batteries.
It's expensive, but you save money on gas and the government (U.S.) gives you a hefty tax break. Who knows, maybe George III will repeal the tax break before you buy one.
We like our Prius and it is surprisingly lively and gets good mileage. I'm six three and weigh too much but I'm fairly comfortable in it.
Toyota also makes a hybrid Camry, but I understand the mileage is not nearly as good.

GM and Chysler already have the hybrid drivetrain technology to build trucks. Back a few years ago, GM, Daimler-Chrysler (back when the two companies were still merged) and BMW all joined forces to develop the 2-Mode hybrid transmission, and it is used in production vehicles. It took 2 years to develop the 2-mode system.

GM put the 2-mode system in its Tahoe Hybrid, Yukon Hybrid and Escalade Hybrids. Chrysler put it in its Aspen Hybrid (which they stopped building two months ago because it wasn't selling well). Daimler/Mercedes Benz is going to put the 2-mode in an upcoming car, but hasn't made any announcements. And BMW will be putting the 2-mode system in its upcoming X6 ActiveHybrid SUV.
