Student asked:

Hi
I have a GT zum S2 hybrid.
I am thinking of upgrading the crankset on it to something a little better.
I have two choices in mind, to either get a better square taper crankset and keep my current bottom bracket, or to get a hollow tech 2 external bottom bracket with the crankset.
There is a nice crankset (HT2) on chainreaction cycles for around £50 which I am looking at.
I wish to keep the 3 ring set up, probably at MTB gearing.
I would like to know, whether:
If I get a new SqT crankset will it change my chainline if I am using the old BB?
If I get the HT2, will it be ok with my 8spd cassette?
Apart from getting the shell faced, an external BB tool and a new 8spd chain, will there be much more stuff needed to do it myself? I have some tools already.
I wish to try todo it myself because 1, the LBS is overly expensive on labour and 2, I wish to learn for future biking maintainence.
What else should I consider?

new site
