gas saving device9 are car companies keeping a gas saving device from us? at Bestgasmileageblog.com
Angela L. asked:

i remember a couple years ago, i was watching a show called mostly true stories: urban legends. i believe it there was an episode called The Car That Runs Forever. it was about a couple who goes out to buy a used car for $400 or something. they buy some gas for the car. they drove for miles but they only used one litre of gas. they kept driving it, but they rarely had to put in gas. one day the woman sends a letter to the company, telling how fuel effiecent the car was, and how great and wonderful and how she only used a litre of gas and how much it went. a week later she sees some men in black suit doing taking a part from the engine of her car. after that, the car just ran like any other car. they had to buy gas regualarly for it.
what i think, if this is true. i think that they have not released this device yet, because they are waiting for when the gas prices REALLY, REALLY go up. so they can sell it and make a LOT of money. if they have released it years ago, the gas prices werent as high as they were, people wouldnt be that intrested in it. and imitators wouldve stolen the idea and there would be many of them everywhere, and it wont be expensive. so if they waited for gas prices to sky rocket, then they released the device, there would be a huge explosion of people buying it, making them billionaires, leaving no time for the imitators to copy. would this be possible?

just another urban Legend, its been around since your great grand parents were kids.
if any car maker finds a way to squeeze 5 mpg more out of their car than the competition gets they will immediately bring it to market to take advantage of the increased sales.

The car companies are not keeping any fuel saving devices from the market. Think about it. If GM invented something like that it would be on every model they make as a marketing tool. How many buyers would get a GM product if it used half as much fuel as the other brands. There is one reason a car company might not put a gas saving device on their cars. If the device was so expensive that it cost more than the fuel that would be saved the car would be too expensive to compete in the market.

an old old myth. Thermodynamics are very well understood and a car going for 100′s of miles on a liter is impossible. Other myths are a carburetter that took cars from 17 mpg to 100 mpg. Or that you can run a car on water. My favorite when I was a kid was the Harley Davidson motorcycles as ARMY surplus for $50. My father said it was $20 when he was a kid.

How could anyone hide devices like that. Everyday people trying to recreate the experiments only to fail and then claim some hidden device and that’s why they failed. Nope, they fail because of the laws of thermodynamics.

Put it right up there with the Iraqi Weapons of Mass Destruction. I had heard about it in the “40′s” right after the war. The **** had invented it because they were oil short. You know it was really a **** space ship at Roswell? Our people had gotten some the equipment and the Blueprints of the Carb. I was working as a Machinist in the “80′s” when one of my co-workers announced he had the prints to make any car get a hundred miles per gallon. When I laughed, he challenged me prove him wrong. He was busily remodeling his carb. He had paid only $500 for the secret prints.. I told him OK. I’d give him a carb for my truck to work on. I was getting less then 20Mpg. pulling my trailer. If he got my truck up to only 50 mpg I’d gladly pay his original $500 fee in full and I’d sign a waiver to never let it fall into someone else’s hands. If he didn’t get me to 25mpg he’d pay me $250 .No deal. He later admitted he never got a single MPG improvement on his.. I told him Barnum said “There’s one born every second”.With our auto industry on the ropes , if they had that carb, they’d pull it out right now. I’m watching the papers for the first sales with one in it..I’ve got my down payment ready. Do you?

No, they aren’t hiding any energy saving device from us, but neither are they trying to develop any. Why bother when they don’t build vehicles for people who care about gas mileage? Anyone who wants to have a vehicle that gets good mileage buys either a german or Japanese car. Remember the Geo Metro?- it got 45 or so mpg- better than many hybrids now, but it doesn’t have enough power for today’s car buyers so isn’t produced. I can think of a type of engine right now that can get more than double the mileage of what engines used now get, but it takes 4-5 minutes to warm up to operating temperature. It wasn’t good enough for Americans who want to turn the key and pull away immediately, so it isn’t produced. Maybe with batteries becoming better it will be coupled with them some day soon, but I bet the foreign companies beat us to it.

DrmmerBoi said in February 11th, 2009 at 9:44 pm

I think that they have no interest in increasing our MPG just yet. In America we average among the lowest in fuel efficiency. Most of Europe and Asia are well ahead of us in this technology. Mostly because we are obsessed with bigger and faster cars and trucks. There is no reason that we can’t overcome this issue, but we first need to address the “why”. As Americans, we need to rethink our fixation with having the biggest, best, and baddest if we are going to get more fuel efficient cars. Bottom line is that we don’t have too many fuel efficient cars because there is virtually no demand for them. If there was a buck to be made from them you better bet your tushy car companies would find a way to make them.

Josh B said in February 12th, 2009 at 1:13 pm

I can’t believe that every one here says no. there are many things the government has capabilities and knowledge of that is not released to the American People. When it come to consumer products only Capitalism applies not usage, reliability, environment issues. McDonald’s would sell you cheap styrofoam if you thought it tastes good.
Oil is one of the Best selling most consumed products in the world. I know I buy 20-30 gallons a week. If the same number of people that spend the same amount on gas applied all of the money they spent in fuel to something like candy bars, Candy Bar stock would sky rocket.

If a company did produce such a device, they would patent it and hold a monopoly on all cars. Increasing the Fuel efficiency of cars to the magnitude that you’re talking about would kill all of the gain from environmental compliance and emissions costs.

There is just too much capital to be gained from oil, there is no way they could allow the demand to drop.

GABY said in February 14th, 2009 at 6:21 pm

Idiotic. If such a device existed areas like Europe and Japan and many other areas which do not have oil would have been using it for years. They have had high fuel prices for years. They have excellent engineers and scientists. No company(s) could keep it from them.

Look at Japan alone. A country the size of California with the population approaching the US. No oil or coal to speak of. Imports huge amounts of energy and 60% of their food. Depends energy for industry to survive. Do you really think they would not be using any practical device that would save energy?

I am constantly amazed at the lack of education and knowledge shown by “Environmentalists”.

John said in February 18th, 2009 at 1:22 am

The American car companies are about to go bankrupt. Don’t you think they’d market the device if they had it?

websterbackhoe said in February 20th, 2009 at 12:29 am

keep your eyes on the chevy volt, this car is one to watch.
the car will run on electric battery power for the first 40 or so miles, so….if you keep within your distances you will not use gas.
sounds great huh

blackcat said in February 21st, 2009 at 12:58 am

Well think about it. Car companies don’t sell gasoline and their sales get hurt by high gas prices.
Why would they not want more fuel efficient cars if they could?
Maybe you want to blame oil companies with this urban myth?
