I don’t think this engine needs to be as bad as some are purporting.
Assuming it’s the stock 330hp 400 with 3.23 gears and tuned right, it probably gets up to 14 on average with combined driving. Get 2.73 gears and you’ll see that climb to 16-17 if your right foot is gentle. A car like a true Ram Air car would be hard-pressed to get more than 12 mpg on the highway due to higher-performance cam and 3.90 or 4.33 gearing – sub-10 mpg would be considered normal around town.

In real world traffie you’re looking at 6-9mpg (depending on how often u open the 4 BBL & maybee 10 on the highway depending on if you use high gears a 2.73,2.56 or 2.41. I doubt you’re car would’ve had 2.28 gears. If you convert to a 200R4 trans (performance modified) you can have a 4th gear OD. That would give you milage of 12-15MPG. I doubt a big block would get over 15mpg even witha 4 speed tranny.
